SPORTS TEAMS:

The Colorado Rockies play home games in the heart of downtown Denver at Coors Field, which offers the nostalgic feel of a classic ballpark mixed with state of the art technology. The Denver Broncos have fans like no other on game days, you’ll see the city awash in the team’s trademark orange and blue colors. The Colorado Avalanche (the “Avs”) are Denver’s beloved hockey team, and the fans are some of the most devoted hockey aficionados in the U.S. The Colorado Rapids have a new home – the sprawling, high-tech Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, which opened its doors in 2007. The Colorado Mammoth is gaining a fervent following in The Mile High City. The team is part of the growing National Lacrosse League. The Denver Outlaws lacrosse team is young, hungry, and provides a great introduction to this exciting sport. The Denver Nuggets truly are one of The Mile High City’s most exciting teams, year after year basketball is an attraction for Denverites.

FUN FACTS:

The first permanent structure in Denver was not a hospital, bank or house—it was a saloon. Denver is one of the few cities in the country that wasn’t built on a road, railroad, lake or navigable body of water. Settlers were attracted to the spot because of the gold found here. At just over 26 miles long, Colfax Avenue is the longest continuous street in America. There are 200 named peaks visible from Denver, including 32 that soar to 13,000 feet and above. The mountain panorama visible from Denver is 140 miles long. The Denver Mint officially opened in 1906 and now produces over 40 million coins per day. You can tell if a coin is made in Denver by a “D” mark.

Denver is home to the second largest performing arts complex in the nation with 10 theaters seating 10,000 people for theater, symphony, opera and ballet. TRANSPORTATION:

B-cycle is a bike-sharing program with red bikes available at kiosks throughout Denver. These migratory bikes are returning for their 4th season with 30 new nesting areas around town. Denver International Airport is twice the size of Manhattan and is the second largest public works project in the world, second only to the Chunnel linking England and France. By land area, it is the largest US airport and third largest in the world. One hundred and ten million cubic yards of earth were moved during the building of the project; this is equivalent to one third the amount of earth moved in building the Panama Canal. RTD and light rail system is divided into four fare zones: A, B, C and Airport. The number of zones you travel in for each one-way trip determines your fare. Arriving trains stop at every station, so you don’t have to signal the driver.
